What is Passback?
A media owner’s ability to repurpose an unfilled impression as a buying opportunity for the next buyer in their waterfall has been a longstanding practice in the industry. This method allows the media owner to attempt to monetize impressions that weren’t initially sold by moving them down the line to subsequent buyers in a pre-defined sequence. However, this approach is becoming increasingly outdated and inefficient. While it was once seen as a necessary workaround to ensure ad inventory was fully utilized, it often results in missed opportunities for optimization and a lack of real-time flexibility. Despite its inefficiency, this model still persists today, limiting the potential of more dynamic, automated solutions that could better maximize revenue and improve the overall buyer experience.
