What is Personally Identifiable Information (PII)?
An identifier that links, or is intended to link, to a person’s directly identifiable offline identity is referred to as Personally Identifiable Information (PII). These identifiers can uniquely associate an individual with specific personal details, making it possible to directly identify them. Examples of such identifiers include a full name, Social Security number, driver’s license number, bank account number, passport number, or email address. Because these pieces of information can directly or indirectly lead to identifying a person, they are crucial in privacy and security considerations. This type of information is often categorized as Directly Identifiable Information due to its ability to distinguish an individual uniquely from others.
